Just wanted to let everyone know that with a new job I won't have the time to keep up with this blog, I also run another blog and will be focusing on that as well as my business. There have been a serious lack of posts on here lately and it is with sadness that I inform my dear followers that I will be taking a break from Vida Moda to concentrate on other ventures and I hope to be back soon. I am loving these retro style eyeglasses that I see everyone sporting lately. But as much as I want to lay down the dough and get a cool pair myself, I just can't bring myself to drop the cash for something that may go out of style? Nevertheless I love them and maybe I should just take the plunge...afterall if you love something enough it will never go out of style in your own eyes right?

While I try and convince myself of that, I may just check out some vintage shops and see if I can get a better price instead of buying new. Yes that is my reasoning and I quite like it. As much as I love a neutral palette when it comes to clothes and my own personal sense of style, I also sometimes get caught up in a world of techni-colour. All I will need to pull off these candy coloured fashion confections is 1) a major tan 2) spring weather... can't wait for next season. My friend Miranda and I decided one fantastic Toronto night to head on over to The International Art Fair to enlighten ourselves, get a little smarter, observe and critique the stunning work that our fellow artists have to offer and maybe sip a glass of wine...or two.

While I loved a lot of these pieces a lot of them were the price of a hefty down payment on a car...wait make that a house. Nonetheless a good time was had by the both of us, and yes we strutted around cameras in hands, attempting phony english accents and talking about our non-existent yachts. Don't you just love the sophisticated art crowd? ...yeah me too.

Achilles heel...

I have an Achilles heel, my weakness has always been shoes. There are months when give or take you gain a few pounds here and there. Winter months are like this for me, I hibernate, and I eat and I gain. I like to just think I am trying to keep warm. No matter how round I may get, my feet remain the same. My size 6 never lets me down. I always laugh when I hit a store and I just got paid...it's a game of good cop bad cop. Should I buy the shoes and the dress? Just the dress? Okay just the shoes right? When all else fails and I realize that realistically I have bills to pay, shoes always win out over clothes. I figure certain pieces might go out of style or I might outgrow them, heck come spring when I shed all the cushy winter weight they will out grow me!

So it is in this spirit of practicality that I ask you, is it so wrong to want these pony skin Finsk pumps even given the extra fat price tag? I think not! Wait, what is 278 Euro in Canadian dollars?

To shop or not to shop?

Cost of living really has skyrocketed in Toronto, for one I can remember a time when houses didn’t cost you half a million dollars, for a prestigious 10x10 spot downtown. Remember when Payless shoes really did cost you less, when Canadian staples like Le Chateau and Aldo were well priced? Yeah me too. These days there has been a spike in the retail sector. Spikes in retail merchandise have lead me to think outside the fashion box. Vintage shopping is not just for the artsy crowd anymore. All over the city consignment shops and vintage stores have seen a rise in consumer ship. However while we should all support this renewing and eco friendly idea, it can become difficult to shop vintage when you are not a size XS or 0. I guess back in the 70’s girls never heard of McDonalds! I digress, vintage shopping really can be fun and because a lot of the merchandise is well priced you can afford to alter or hem your purchases.

As well as vintage shopping, it’s a good idea to head over to some of your favourite shops or their websites for some online shopping. Having worked several years in retail management I can tell you that collections both clothing and home décor come out a season early. That is why when we were in the dead of summer enjoying whatever sun we could get; the stores were already selling fall scarves, knee high boots and tights. It’s a good idea to check out your favourite stores because a lot of them are having sales.

At Aldo, the majority of the time a pair of great pumps will set you back over $100 but there are ways to multitask your purchases. Yes I said multitask...trust me. Right now Aldo has tons of clearance shoes on their on-line website, sure some of them are peep toe gladiator sandals, but with a little ingenuity and some opaque tights these shoes can be worn in the fall and then again in the summer. If that’s not a 2 for 1 special then I don’t know what is. $30 for real leather shoes...I think I love this idea!

I have a major crush on these outfits from UK retailer ASOS. Problem is, as I am the avid ebayer, I have been lately forced to cut down on all the international purchases due to those dreaded customs fees!! Sometimes they cost more than the merchandise itself. Why oh why can't all of the UK retailers like TOPSHOP and ASOS open up locations in Toronto, please? oh well I may just have to forego reason and order some of these looks anyway.
P.S. I heard a good while ago that TOPSHOP was supposed to come to Holt Renfrew, does anyone out there know if this has happened yet?

Has anyone else noticed the vampire craze that has been unearthed in the last year? Vampire inspired books have been popping up everywhere from Stephenie Meyer’s beloved Twilight Saga, to the increasingly popular Vampire Diaries. It was not going to be long before vampire’s had a resurgence on the big screen, gone are the days of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Nosferatu, The Lost Boys, Interview with the Vampire, From Dusk til’ Dawn, the Blade trilogy and cult films like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Vampires have risen from the dead, to be reborn in the form of non-terrifying English actors, portraying the un-dead as heartthrob-like, elegant, cultured and worldly. Living corpses have never been so appealing, and with books like Meyer’s painting its lead vampire in the likeness of a Roman sculpture, it’s no wonder why we’ve all begun to swoon. Author’s like Meyer have deconstructed the Vampire myths we’ve come to know, her vampires aren’t afraid of garlic, they can go into the sunlight without bursting into flames, and they have no noticeable fangs. Even their diets have been altered to suit modern times and opinions, they feed off of animals instead of humans, and as her main character Edward Cullen puts it, they have become "vegetarians". Vampires are becoming human in their recent film and published adaptations, and we are finding them less repulsive and a lot more alluring and relatable than we used to. They are no longer the villains in the story, but the love interests, and it is this absurd irony of a love between the living and the dead that keeps readers and movie goers wanting more. While hardcore Twilight fans countdown the months until the anticipated release of the sequel to Twilight, New Moon comes out next year, those of us who have been bitten hard, have to satiate our blood thirst other ways. HBO has come out with their answer to the PG rated Twilight with their new series True Blood. While Meyer’s books attempt to romanticize the love between a human and a vampire, True Blood’s raunchy, vulgar, sexy, humour-driven and scary portrayal legitimizes the fear back where it belongs, and explores a new environment for the bloodsuckers, a small red neck town. The HBO series is based on Charlaine Harris’s equally popular "Sookie Stackhouse" novels, and digs deeper into ethical questions, dissecting the notion of vampires as equals amongst humans, posing such questions as, can vampires and humans co-exist, and if they can, what are their rights in society? The show examines the boundaries of human rights, but what if you aren’t human? Are vampires today what Rosa Parks was for her generation? True Blood is a clever new approach on the vampire mythology and delves into moral and political implications of co-habituating with vampires, while maintaining a sense of humour. And just when you thought the sun would come out and all the craze was dying down for at least a few months, vampires are not going anywhere, anytime soon. The CW network has just green lighted a pilot for the best selling novels The Vampire Diaries to be made into a series of the same name. As long as teenage girls and their mothers buy into the Vampire market, then we will be seeing a lot more of their pale faces around. Don’t be ashamed I say, jump onto the groupie bandwagon that is the Vampire phenomenon; embrace the un-dead.

Remember True Blood is set to air in June and New Moon will be out in the fall!

Last summer I was lucky enough to partake in an overseas adventure in Italy and France. An entire year later I still can't seem to shake it, I can't help it but I miss travelling during the summer months. I used to go every summer, but as many of you know as we get older, and we take on more responsibilities ( in my case a house) then travelling gets the back burner...but that doesn't mean that I can't reminisce.

I loved Italy, and one of my favourite cities was Florence. It is a lovely place, big enough that you can find anything you can dream of to do, but small enough that it doesn't seem overwhelming even for a foreigner like me. It's streets are quaint; beautiful shops and trattorias line the streets. Of course if you don't feel like waiting in the dead heat, in the around-the-block museum lineups to see Botticelli's Venus, no fear because the streets in Florence become the art, and the artists line the streets.

Okay so a couple of posts back I recall criticizing "People" magazine's annual best dressed list, mainly because they named Michelle Obama as a style icon. Now, I still don't believe that she has the style makings of Jackie O, but nonetheless I would be lying if I didn't at least agree that she has indeed brought a fresh new spark back to politics, and indeed back to the white house! I loved her unconventional pick for the inaugural ball, a white, airy, light as a feather, cherubic frock that oozed grace, elegance and indeed style! So I must admit...I was wrong...Mrs.Obama is quite stylish. Keep up the good work!

So I've never watched a single episode of The City, with a new house I'm super busy lately decorating all the time. But that doesn't mean that I haven't noticed a few stylish gals in all the promo ads on MTV. One such "social" is Olivia the bitchy new friend of Whitney Port. I think despite all the bitchiness the girl def. has some style!
